VOLUNTEERING
We rely on our 50-strong network of volunteers to keep the museum open and help our visitors have the best possible experience.

Volunteering
It’s no exaggeration to say that much of our success is down to our volunteers! They take on a wide range of tasks, including:
- Retail and catering
- Knitting demonstrations
- Facilities maintenance
- Fundraising
- Educational activities
- Events
- Administration
- Gardening
- Research
- Collections cataloguing
Why volunteer?
We offer all kinds of opportunities to use your existing skills and learn new ones - not to mention making new friends, having fun and enjoying our beautiful working environment! Whatever your age and abilities, you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome when you join our volunteer team.
In return for your time, commitment and enthusiasm, you’ll receive all the training and support you need to make the most of your time as a volunteer.
You’ll also be invited to our annual Christmas Fuddle and social event, as our way of saying ‘thank you’.
Joining our team can be very rewarding, which is why lots of our volunteers have been with us for many years.

Interested in volunteering?
Take a look at our Vacancies page to find out about the volunteer roles that we’re currently recruiting for.
If there’s a match with your skills and experience, or you’d like to be trained to carry out a role, please get in touch.
We occasionally run volunteer recruitment and information events, which offer the chance to meet our team and find out about current vacancies in informal surroundings.
Please visit our Events page for details of any forthcoming dates.
What happens next?
If you'd like to find out more about volunteering with us, please get in touch with the museum.
If we feel your skills and experience could benefit the museum, we’ll ask you to attend an informal interview to discuss how you’d like to work with us.
You’ll be able to ask questions, talk to existing volunteers and see some of the tasks which you might get involved in.
If you then decide to join us, you’ll go through a structured Volunteer Induction Process to make sure you understand what’s expected from you and what to expect from us in return.

My sister and I loved this museum. Especially the guided tours explaining how the machines work and the working and living conditions of the frame knitters at the time. Even got the chance to take a look at Queen Victoria’s stockings in the former methodist church across the cottages. Excellent museum! Very entertaining and interesting

Excellent Museum!
Second visit to this fascinating museum, a veritable storehouse of social history, staffed by knowledgeable, enthusiastic folk. Some steps may prove difficult for the elderly or infirm but there’s plenty to appreciate at ground level.
