Letters, journals and newspapers

Going round the museum, you will find a variety of letters and journals and a newspaper. These have been written by a local writer, drawing on extensive research into the times of the Luddite rebellions. They throw light on important issues of the period as well as being grounded in a strong sense of character.

The Memoirs of Joseph Burdett

Joseph Burdett was a framework knitter who wrote a memoir of his early experiences. In these extracts, we can read about how exploited the framework knitters were, and also an eye-witness account of a Luddite attack.
